THE RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK is a
beautiful, striking dog of ancient origins, yet is not very well known outside of breeding and showing circles. Originating in Africa, the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1955.
The Ridgeback is a strong, muscular and athletic dog, with an even temperament and devoted, affectionate loyalty to his owner, making him a perfect family pet. He is also intelligent, playful and reserved with strangers.
Most striking about this breed is the ridge down its back for which it got it's name. The ridge is formed by the dog's hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat, which is always light to red wheaten in color.
Owning a Ridgeback is stress-free since their short coat means little shedding, they are generally odor-free, and relatively easy to house train. They also do not bark indiscriminately and are quiet to live with, as long as they get the social interaction and exercise they require.
